PDU Sitges Charity Race
Phenylketonuria (PKU) is a hereditary metabolic disorder that affects the body's ability to process phenylalanine, an amino acid found in proteins. As a result, phenylalanine levels in the blood accumulate and can cause irreversible brain damage if not properly treated.
With proper treatment, people with PKU can lead normal and healthy lives. However, while PKU is treatable, there is still no cure for the disease. That is why research in this field is so important to find better treatments and ultimately a cure.
The PDU Sitges Charity Race is held annually with the aim of raising funds for PKU research and raising awareness about this metabolic disorder. This year, the race celebrates its 9th edition and will take place on Sunday, May 26, 2024. At 10:00 a.m., the starting signal will be given from the Terramar Gardens to the Promenade.
In its first edition, the race was organized by Charo Sánchez and Alfonso Lügstenmann, parents of Candela, the Sitges girl affected by PKU. In 2019, it mobilized about 1,200 runners and raised around €16,800 to fight the disease. Since then, the organizers have allocated over €70,000 of the proceeds to support the Hospital San Juan de Dios and the PKU Foundation.
All registration proceeds will be donated to the PKU Foundation and other hereditary metabolic disorders to develop the biosensor, which is currently being developed by the Metabolic Diseases Laboratory at SANT JOAN DE DÉU Hospital in Barcelona.
Course Route
The race is about 5 kilometers, from the Terramar Gardens to the Greco statue (on the Ribera promenade) and back to the starting point. There are also activities for the whole family, such as a health fair and an obstacle course for children. The cost to participate is €14.
If you are unable to participate in the race, you can also support it in other ways. You can make a donation through the race's website or volunteer to help organize the event. Any kind of support is welcome and contributes to the cause.
The race will start at 10:00 a.m. in the Terramar Gardens, and the trophy presentation is expected around 11:45 a.m. There will be various activities in the Terramar Gardens, with workshops and informational booths about PKU, as well as tastings of products suitable for people with PKU, who must follow a very specific diet to avoid damage to their nervous system.
