Did you know that the Gold Coast gets its name from the color of the sand on its long, shallow beaches?

Without a doubt, the Gold Coast is one of the most stunning places along the Catalan coastline. Located in the province of Tarragona, it is the coastal stretch that extends from the mouth of the Foix River to the Ebro Delta. But this area isn’t just about beaches; it also boasts locations of great touristic, cultural, archaeological, and gastronomic interest.

Salou

Salou is one of the top tourist destinations on the Gold Coast. We invite you to explore its many attractions, from the beaches and coastal trails to the streets, the palm-lined promenade, the historical monuments, the pier, the festive city atmosphere, and its wide range of hotels and dining options.

Moreover, it’s impossible not to mention PortAventura World, the most visited tourist complex in Catalonia. It includes two theme parks (Port Aventura and Ferrari Land) and a water park. Located between the towns of Salou and Vila-seca, thousands of visitors come every year to enjoy these spectacular recreational facilities.

Tamarit

The town that likely boasts the most beautiful views on the Gold Coast is Tamarit. In this municipality, you can enjoy peaceful walks along the fine sands of typical Mediterranean beaches and coves. Don’t forget to visit the impressive medieval castle by the sea, as well as the watchtowers built to protect the town from pirate attacks in the 16th century.

If you’re a camping enthusiast, Tamarit is your ideal destination. The range of camping services in the area allows you to enjoy breathtaking sunrises by the sea, in a perfect location surrounded by nature, making Tamarit one of the most picturesque towns on the Gold Coast.

Calafell

The first settlement in Calafell dates back to the Iberian period, so the current municipality preserves many historical structures, such as some of Spain’s most important Iberian archaeological sites, the Santa Creu del Castell church with its original mural paintings, and the Sant Pere Pescador church, protected as a Cultural Asset of Local Interest.

Located in the northern part of the Gold Coast, Calafell is perfect for a tourist route rich in history and archaeology. It also offers a wide variety of leisure and entertainment options year-round, especially water sports such as windsurfing and paddleboarding, but also tennis, golf, and horseback riding.

And you must try its signature dishes, such as “arrossejat,” a traditional fisherman's meal, and “xató,” a typical escarole salad from the Penedès region.

Cambrils

In addition to having a strong tourist infrastructure and expansive beaches, Cambrils is also a gastronomic hotspot. This is due to its long-standing culinary tradition, starting with the simple bars frequented by tourists and evolving into today’s restaurants, some of which have received national and international accolades. The sea and land provide the raw materials for Cambrils' cuisine, including the notable olives and Siurana Protected Designation of Origin olive oil.

For lovers of seafood cuisine, Cambrils is the jewel of the Gold Coast. After a delicious meal, you can snap a photo in front of its famous Port Tower and, of course, take a dip in the sea.

El Vendrell

El Vendrell, northeast of Tarragona, is the birthplace of cellist Pau Casals. Here, you can visit his birthplace and a museum dedicated to him. There is also the Àngel Guimerà house-museum, which occupies the family’s old home and preserves several mementos of the author of Mar i cel. Additionally, El Vendrell has a rich “casteller” tradition and a monument dedicated to the human towers, sculpted by Josep Cañas i Cañas.

While the town lacks large infrastructure, except for the Coma-ruga marina, it does offer small and medium-sized hotels and restaurants. It is a tranquil area for family tourism with clean-water beaches and a variety of accommodations. For those who want to experience the Gold Coast in all its glory but without the tourist crowds of larger resorts, El Vendrell is a sure bet.
